For the love of mud, throw out your Morton’s!!!  (Or at least put it under the sink for future use scrubbing tea stains out of porcelain.)

I could spend days expounding on the pros and cons of Himalayan pink salt, sea salt, and [cringe] table salt, but instead I’ll attempt to limit my usual verbosity and give you the highlights, plus some resources for further reading that go into greater depth.

Back in the day, 300 plus million years ago or so, the primordial ocean contained the only living organism on Earth – a halophilic pink algae that created the first oxygen on the planet, providing an atmosphere in which the first multi-celled organisms could be born.  Over millions of years, the pristine pre-Cambrian ocean slowly evaporated, exposing the rising sea floor that would eventually become the Himalayan Mountains.  Great fields of brine deposits sat under the stars for millions of years, absorbing cosmic energy until they were finally subducted under the Asia plate.  Deep in the Earth, where the tectonic pressure was just right, the salt deposits spent a few more million years and crystallized into lenticular crystal beds.  As with all crystals, such as diamonds, the more geometrically perfect the shape is, the higher the information content, and the more valuable the crystal.  The importance of a superior crystalline structure for our bodies is that the energy released from dissolving these crystals can be transferred to your cells and tissues, and the trace elements within them can be easily absorbed and metabolized.

You may be wondering:  Why does this mean I should trash my table salt?  Cogitate on, dear reader…

Since life was formed in the ancient primordial ocean, our bodies reflect that chemical makeup.  We unequivocally need salt, and our blood and tears contain the same percentage of salt as the ocean – which is certainly no coincidence.  Salt was in use long before the earliest history was recorded, and has been valued in economic, political, religious, and social spheres of culture all over the world and for thousands of years.  And yet, today we seem to fear it – medical sodium stigmas urging us to shun the use of the very building blocks that brought us into existence.

Tsk, tsk.

While it is true that too much sodium is difficult for our bodies to process, this isn’t entirely the fault of salt.  90% of the world’s salt today is being used for industrial purposes that require sodium chloride, and so it is chemically “cleaned”.  Through the use of ingenious marketing, we’ve been convinced of the advantages of then adding back in potentially toxic iodine and fluoride – often along with several other dangerous preservatives (calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, and aluminum hydroxide are often added to improve the ability of table salt to pour).  Our bodies no longer recognize this manufactured “salt”, and actually see it as an aggressive cellular poison.  This unnatural form is added into every preserved and processed food you eat, and in order for your body to try and metabolize table salt crystals, tremendous amounts of energy are sacrificed.  Additionally, inorganic sodium chloride can prevent the body from reaching an ideal balance of fluids and can overburden your elimination systems.  For every gram of sodium chloride your body can’t get rid of, 23 times the amount of cell water is needed to neutralize it, causing cellulite, arthritis, rheumatism, gout, kidney and gall stones, asthma, cancer, heart disease… the list goes on.

Many people believe sea salt is a healthier alternative to table salt, which is correct – in theory.  However, today our seas are polluted and used as dumping grounds for toxins such as mercury, PCBs, and dioxin, not to mention the growing frequency of oil spills.  Many sea salt producers use concrete basins for the seawater to evaporate, allowing chemicals from the concrete to leach into the salt, and then continue to refine it – rendering it nutritionally void.

The underlying point of this post is to recommend that we all go back to the basic building blocks of life – luckily those can be found in Himalayan pink salt.  This salt, imbued with the 84 elements found in our bodies and containing the energetic vibrations present when life on this planet was formed, can not only cleanse and restore balance to our systems, but benefit us physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.  By creating and regularly ingesting sole (pronounced so-lay), replacing our cooking and flavoring salt, using salt lamps, and even bathing in it we can quickly undo the damage of processed table salt and numerous other toxins we’re exposed to on a daily basis.  A few of the myriad benefits are:

  • Supplying the body with the natural energy stored in the crystals, which the body can hold for up to 24 hours.
  • Balancing the alkaline/acidity in the body and normalizing blood pressure.
  • Dissolving and eliminating sediments which lead to stones and various forms of rheumatism and arthritis.
  • Lowering cravings for addictive additives.
  • Helping with skin diseases by cleaning from inside out.
  • Increasing the quality of sleep.
  • Increasing energy, concentration, and brain activity.
  • Assisting weight loss.
  • Enhancing good will, elevating moods, and diminishing negativity – bringing greater peace of mind.
  • Activating the heart chakra, and stimulating self-love.
  • Stimulating and preserving the acupressure/acupuncture meridians.
  • Augmenting strength during physical activities.
  • Taking a half an hour bath with Himalayan pink salts (at the right concentration: approximately 1%, which is the same as our bodily fluids) can achieve an osmotic exchange, initiating homeostasis.  It’s basically like being in the womb again, and has the same effect on the body as a three day detox!!

There are many other benefits on several different levels that can be achieved by incorporating Himalayan pink salt into your lifestyle.  For further information, check out these resources:

Key words:  Self-knowledge, realization of multidimensional self, self-acceptance, forgiveness, infusion of oneself with Light

Element:  Storm

Chakras:  All

The Oracle at Delphi instructed, “Know thyself,” and this is the essential message of Astrophyllite.  I refer to the Book of Stones by Robert Simmons and Naisha Ahsian for most of the following information, and encourage anyone interested to read the full passage on Astrophyllite.

“[Astrophyllite] can reveal the hidden pattern of one’s divine blueprint, or life purpose, if one is willing to work with it awhile in meditation.  Another way to achieve this is to simply wear or carry the stone, then learn to pay close attention to the synchronicities in one’s everyday life.  Following the pattern of such ‘random’ events, one can discern the outline of what the Universe wants from us and for us.  Astrophyllite is both a magnet for these synchronicities and an aid to being more aware of their occurence and meaning.”

“Being out of alignment with one’s inner purpose can cause all sorts of symptoms, such as boredom, depression, overeating, addictions, and so forth.  Astrophyllite can aid one in shedding such states, not as a direct remedy, but as an amplifier of one’s latent interest in the deeper and more significant purpose of one’s life.  …The complex [crystalline] structures and flashing reflections of Astrophyllite resonate with its deeper meaning – to shine a light on the mirror of consciousness, to illuminate the true self.”

“[It is] a powerful Storm element stone that activates the chakra column to become a channel for high-frequency Light energy.  It activates and connects the Soul Star chakra above the head and the Earthstar chakra below the feet.  In the connection of these two powerful etheric centers, all other chakras in the body are activated, charged and aligned.  Astrophyllite enables one to resonate with and radiate the full spectrum of electromagnetic energy that is the Light.  From the highest-frequency energy to the lowest, Astrophyllite reminds us that the entire spectrum of Light is necessary to our health and our spiritual growth. ”

“Astrophyllite has the ability to direct Light into the darkest recesses of one’s being and experience.  It can help one perceive and understand one’s most buried and unacknowledged thoughts and feelings.  By bringing these shadow aspects of the self to conscious awareness, wholeness, self-acceptance and self-forgiveness can be achieved.  Astrophyllite is excellent for those who believe they are beyond redemption or salvation due to their ego investment in the shadow self.  It can help these individuals to perceive their inherent divinity, fully accepting and loving themselves, deciding to live their full potential. “

“Astrophyllite strengthens the energy field, acting as a natural protection against negative or harmful vibrations.  …[It] can mediate the effects of electromagnetic pollution – such as that produced by electronics, radio transmitters or cell towers – even as it assists the body in processing a broader range of electromagnetic energy.  It acts as a natural protection against radioactivity as well.”

“Astrophyllite can help one accept one’s shadow self and feel more whole and accepting of oneself.  It can give hope to those who fear the judgment of others or the Divine.  It assists one in finding Light in the darkest corners and in deciding to express one’s full Light in the world.  Astrophyllite allows one to face one’s darkest fears and reclaim one’s full power.”

“Astrophyllite is useful in supporting detoxification on an energetic or spiritual level.”

Astrophyllite has always been one of my favorite pocket stones – probably because the piece I have is a rounded square:  perfect for turning over in my hands, and unintrusive in the back pocket of my jeans.  I experienced the power of this stone recently while working to identify the many roles I play in life.  There were roles affecting almost all of my chakras – from the Satisfier in my root up to the Protector in my third eye.  I needed to accept these roles and release them – even the new role of Wife I had just taken on!  Only my crown chakra wasn’t holding any roles – I had a reluctance towards divine connection, and, by the end of the session, I could feel the Light and energy of a Divine Presence flowing through me.

In my day-to-day life, I had just been informed that all the bureaucratic hoops had been jumped through, and I was officially a full-time, permanent employee, per the United States Government (I had been operating under a contract as a graduate student for the last year in the library).  I was debating if I should commit myself to three years in exchange for student loan repayment – a deal I was not particularly keen on, but hesitant to dismiss.  Within a few days of my transition going through, a friend told me he was interested in helping me set up my business as a dowser and healer.  That same day – despite prior approval and activation – my government transition came tumbling down like a house of cards.  My contract ended in a few days, and it would be weeks before they could post a vacancy and rehire me.  It seems the Universe didn’t want me to get too comfortable.  I was researching Astrophyllite as this comedy of errors played out, and, much to my co-workers surprise, I didn’t get upset or start to freak out about how I would survive until the paychecks started coming again.  It might sound strange, but this unexpected time seems like a gift.  I now have an opportunity to knock out a lot of business and finance-related details I hadn’t had time to think about before.  I enjoy my day job, however, I have wanted to expand beyond the 9 to 5 grind for awhile now, but had yet to take any sort of leap towards doing so.  By looking at the synchronicities of several unrelated events in my life, I recognize the opportunity the Universe presented.  I now have the chance (and time) to create the foundation for my future endeavors long after this current governmental mess is resolved and I return to the library.  Astrophyllite helped me to see the lemonade I could easily make out of the lemons I was given!

It’s physics.

No, really.  It is.

Everyone think back to the homework you copied off the smart kid in 12th grade physics.  The Law of Vibration & Resonance, very simply put, determines the vibrational intensity a system projects.  If you have two fields resonating at a similar frequency and amplitude, they make a third similar field.  If you have two fields with a dissimilar frequency and amplitude, their vibrations must come into a state of resonance, where the smaller field will shift and come into harmony with the larger one.

I can hear your brain wondering, “So, what?”

Back to our old friend, Science: Blood is made up of hemoglobin, which is a rhombic, prismatic crystal.  Everytime blood moves through your heart, it becomes programed with the frequency of your heart (which is determined by your thoughts, emotions, and beliefs).   Human beings are giant EMF (electromagnetic frequency) oscillators, and when we are exposed to systems emitting vibrations of a louder amplitude than our natural balance, our resonance shifts.  These overpowering fields can originate from many sources, including having a lot of electronic equipment or unshielded wires in the home, someone near us in a really bad mood, or stones and crystals.

The body has a natural instinct to move towards balance, and developing your intuition is the first step to reaching that equilibrium.  Have you ever been walking somewhere and spotted a rock that you just had to pick up?  It may have been pretty, or had an odd texture, or fit perfectly in your hand – whatever the reason, chances are, it was resonating at a frequency and amplitude that your body craved.  By bringing it into your electromagnetic field, you allowed the stone to alter the vibrations of atoms in your body with a similar vibratory field, creating a larger resonant field between your energy and that of the stone.  This has a domino effect affecting the other vibrational fields in your body, ultimately causing an energetic shift.

There are two main points I’m trying to illustrate:

1.  Working with crystals and stones is not just for people who drank the kool-aid: it’s based on the unchanging principles that govern our universe and allow it to exist and thrive.  While valuable during healing sessions, incorporating them into our everyday lives is simpler (and subtler) than one might think – wearing an amber necklace to stimulate the throat chakra, placing amethyst by your bed for insomnia, using black tourmaline to block EMFs emitted by your computer, or just carrying a rock you felt drawn to in your pocket.  We can all benefit from the vibratory gifts the Earth has provided for us.

2.  The Law of Resonance applies to more than just stones.  Reiki, Tai Chi, Qigong, and sound therapy are just a few forms of vibrational healing.  Energy medicine is an ancient art that is only now being taken seriously by the Western scientific community, but we often practice it (albeit sometimes poorly) without even realizing.  We’ve all had those moments of getting in an elevator with someone who’s angry or upset and finding our mood becomes sour as well, or a friend who’s laughter is truly contagious.  You don’t have to be an expert to have an impact on those around you, so being aware of the energy you put forth is, if nothing more, a courtesy to your neighbors.  The next time you have a friend having a bad day, see if you can raise their vibrations and elevate their mood with your own energy, instead of vice versa.

A few resources for those seeking a deeper understanding:

How and Why Stones and Crystals Work by Naisha Ahsian gives a much better description of the particle physics behind everything.  She also co-authored The Book of Stones with Robert Simmons, which I find to be an indispensable guide for identifying and understanding the subtle energies of minerals.

The Crystal Bible by Judy Hall is a good quick-reference guide with a great index that cross-references stones and attributes.

More common in Europe – especially Poland – Salt Caves are believed to improve many dis-eases of the respiratory, circulatory, and endocrine systems.  After all, what is salt, but crystals!
